Okanagan winters can wreak havoc on your floors, leaving them scratched up, covered in dirt and salt residue at the end of the season. Luckily here at Small’s Flooring we’ve got some spring floor care tips to help you get past the cold Kelowna winters, and jump into spring with your floors looking brand new!

Spring Floor Care

It’s near impossible to keep your floors looking perfect during the winter. Even with consistent cleaning and care your floors may be looking a little worse for wear. Luckily, spring is the perfect time to fix up your floors, and get those floors looking new!

Removing Salt Residue from your Floors

A big part of spring floor care is removing the dirt and salt left on your floors from the winter. Sometimes removing salt residue can be quite the task, due to the makeup of conventional ice-melting products. Most are calcium or salt-based, which leave a noticeable residue on your floors!

The salt and calcium are alkaline based, so a normal floor cleaner is generally ineffective. In order to properly clean the salt from your floors, you need to use an acidic pH neutralizer. When an acidic neutralizer is used, the salt or calcium residue is easily removed. This helps remove salt residue from your carpets as well!

As a stop-gap solution, you can also use a white vinegar solution to remove salt residue from your floors. Simply dilute some white vinegar in lukewarm water and scrub your floors with it, removing the salt residue!

Stripping your Hardwood Floors

Home owners may also want to look into having their hardwood floors stripped after a long winter season. Stripping your floors will remove the stains brought in by the winter, allowing the new floor shine to return!
