It’s that time of the year. Your kids and pets are running amok with wet, muddy shoes during the winter season. Someone spilled hot cocoa on the living room carpet. Instead of having to worry about deep-cleaning your carpet every week, it could be time to invest in some new stain-resistant carpeting!

Which carpeting materials are the most stain-resistant?

As with every other decision you’ll make in regards to home improvement, there are different options for different budgets.

Wool Carpeting

Wool is naturally stain-resistant material, that generally doesn’t need to be chemically treated to have exceptional stain resistance. It is more expensive than nylon or polyester carpeting, while wool is resistant to both liquids and oils. Other carpeting materials may have been treated to be resistant to both, making wool an easy choice for who want a more environmentally friendly, natural carpet.

Nylon Carpeting

Aside from being the most popular carpet material, nylon is also very stain-resistant. With a high quality stain coating, nylon carpet can be right up there with wool. Nylon’s ability to resist stains can vary from product to product, as nylon isn’t as naturally resistant as wool. The variety of brands and coating is a huge plus, leaving buyers with many options to suit their needs and budgets.

Polyester Carpeting

Polyester being the cheapest of the three materials we’ll discuss today, is also the least stain-resistant of the group. Being an oil-based carpet material, it will resist liquids very well, but attract oils. If you’re going to be carpeting a room where there won’t be much oil (generally from shoes, or bare feet), polyester may be the best choice for you. Not to mention, good for your wallet!

What else should I consider?

There are some other materials to consider, but are generally cheaper, and less stain-resistant than the three we’ve talked about here. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us, or give us a call at Small’s Flooring!
